StitchFix #1 | Review

4.03.2013

I'm sure you saw me tweeting and blowing up the social media world with my referral code for StitchFix. I'm all about testing out new subscription services and from what I've seen from other bloggers, this one looked promising!

After a few weeks, I was off the wait list and my first "fix" was in the mail.

Here's how it works:

  1. Fill out a style profile that is very detailed to help you stylists pick the perfect pieces for you. Don't be afraid to share pinterest boards!
  2. Schedule your first "fix" for $20. That $20 goes towards any of the 5 items in your fix!
  3. Receive your hand-picked goodies, try them on at home with your favorites pumps, belt and accessories. Log into you account online and checkout for the items you're keeping. (Bonus: you get 20% off if you keep all 5!).
  4. Send back everything else and schedule another "fix".

When I opened the package, I was super excited to see colors and patterns that I loved! I pulled all the items out but was way too sore/exhausted from the half to try anything on.

A few weeks back, my friend's sister asked if I'd be interested in making golf themed cupcakes for her son's 2nd birthday. She remembered a while back when I casually mentioned on this blog that I wanted to get paid to bake things for people. I was so honored and flattered that she asked me (and that she reads this blog!). I of course agreed and got right to work planning.

Bethany requested "cupcakes-in-a-jar" which is a big trend these days all over pinterest. I had made them once before so I was confident I could pull it off for Palmer's party.

The cupcakes turned out just right and from what I hear, they were a hit at the party. But I didn't just want them to look good, I wanted them to taste good too. I mean, after all, Bethany wasn't paying me to make cupcakes that looked awesome but tasted like crap.

1. Recovery week felt awesome. A few easy workouts to loosen up the muscles and a great ride with Becca on Friday. I'm excited to get back on my bike some more, especially off the trainer and onto the roads. By the way, if you're in the DFW area and want to train with a team, check out our site. I'm so sad to be leaving this group when we move because everyone is so amazing.

This picture is more fitting of our team's relationship. Get on in there mike :)

2. C and I spent some time with our minister, Elizabeth, this weekend, discussing marriage and our new chapter. It's so exciting that it's getting so close! We'll meet with her again in a few days to plan the ceremony.

3. We also spent some time checking out wedding bands this weekend. I think C was hoping there would be more options for him but we found the perfect one pretty easily.

4. I'm thinking I should do a make-up favorites round up again soon. There are a few products I've been crushing on lately and y'all should probably know about them.

5. I made these last night and they are SO good and SUPER easy. I used brown rice syrup instead of agave because that's what I had on hand.

6. I also attempted my first batch of kale chips. Other than being WAY over salted, they were delicious! I think we'll be making them again.

7. Maybe this warrants a full post but y'all the apartments in New Haven...while they are significantly less expensive, they are also significantly smaller and older. Can I get some full-size appliances please? I mean, it'll be great and we'll find something totally adorable and perfect, but the hunt has been...interesting to say the least.

8. Mad Men returns this weekend! Also, completely different topic but I need more Reese Witherspoon in my life.

9. 1 month of work left before our London/Edinburgh trip! Did I tell you about that yet?

{race report} Dallas Rock 'n Roll Half Marathon

3.28.2013

Just mere days after completing my first half marathon, I had signed up for my next one. My legs were still sore and the pain I felt after finishing that race was still fresh in my mind. And yet, I coughed up the $85 and put the March 24th race on my calendar.

I took a LOT of time off between my last half in December and this recent race. The "off-season" got the best of me and I was very unfocused on training. When the days are short and the temps hit freezing, there's not a chance I make it outside for my runs. Let me just tell you, the treadmill is a poor substitute for pavement. Maybe it's just me, but I always feel very off balance on the treadmill. I also get very bored. I don't really listen to music when I run so I have to rely on the TV. As you can see, it can become a complicated situation for me, especially if the treadmill right in front of the TV is taken.

In the end, race day came and I didn't feel prepared at all. But whatever, it was just 13.1 miles. I'd managed to cross that finish line somehow...

I obsessively checked the weather all week. 40 degrees with 35 mph winds. Super. At least that sounded slightly better than the humid, 80 degrees I ran in for my last half.

But let's cut to the chase here. There was something like 14 corrals and you better believe I was assigned corral 12. That meant we shivered in the cold for an extra 30 minutes or so. Oh and yes, "we" being me and C because he so graciously agreed to start with me. He's a keeper, that one.

It wasn't until about mile 4 that I could finally feel my feet and legs. C was probably more miserable and thankfully agreed to run the whole race with me. It was fun having my own personal pacer.

1. Spent some times volunteering at the zoo this weekend for my Junior League placement. I'm looking forward to affiliating with the New Haven chapter when we move.

2. It was 40 degrees with 35mph winds for my half marathon on Sunday. But in the end, I managed to PR and have a great time. Check back for my race report!

3. I had the pleasure of making these precious cupcakes for a very special 2 year-old. Just call me Martha and yes, I'm taking orders. (More on this to come!)

4. My skin is definitely looking better and better each day. I'll admit, I cheated with the dairy a little bit (I mean, come on, chocolate milk is the BEST recovery fuel and who can say no to pizza...?) but I'm still limited my intake for the most part.

5. I received my first StitchFix this weekend and can't wait to get home from work to try everything on! (I was way too sore last night...)

6. I also received my first Julep Maven box. I already knew what would be in it so it's not a super fun surprise but I'll let you know how the polish holds up when I try it.

7. Glad this is a short week and that the temps are supposed to heat up here in Dallas. I got re-fit on my bike and I'm looking forward to riding a bit this weekend.

8. Mad Men returns next week and I'm so ready. I need something fill the void since Downton Abbey broke my heart.

9. I'm really looking forward to our trip to CT in April and hoping we find a place to live. I would love to cross that off the to-do list.

10. Invitations are ordered! This wedding is happening! 110 days!
