austin eats | part 2

8.05.2014

The wait is over, part two is here! Did you get a chance to check out part one?

We stuffed ourselves to the brim at Olivia after a recommendation from a trusted friend. Classic, yummy brunch food with a twist. I mean, do you see those eggs? They were served over the most delicious french fries! And yes, we did order pancakes as well. But our eyes were bigger than our stomachs.

A HUGE thank you to Erica and Tyler for picking out this place and for our sweet wedding gift to eat here! Olive & June is so cute with adorable outdoor seating and a great dining room. The food was great right down to the drinks. We had a lovely date night and even ended up trying another restaurant owned by the same group, The Backspace, the following night.

Two words. Butter coffee. Yes. I've mentioned it on this blog before but this place makes it and dang, it's good! The idea is that the healthy fats from the butter, MCT oil (or coconut oil) blended with coffee make a well balanced breakfast. It's Paleo inspired and they serve a variety of meals that are also Paleo. It's such a fun place to grab a coffee and start your day!

Do I really need to say anything about this place? Meat. BBQ. Meat. Beer. Meat. Texas. 'Nuff said.

One of the things we love the most about Austin is all the amazing places to eat. We vowed to not eat at the same place twice in order to ensure that we try a variety of new places. I love looking at restaurant recommendations on other blogs so I thought it might be fun to share the places we've tried and loved so far.

I don't really crave BBQ but you know, when in Texas. So we yelped this restaurant and made a quick reservation. It's downtown and actually quite large inside with two floors. There's usually live music and a great bar if you're waiting for a table. The menu is basically meat and sides - so make sure you're hungry! C and I opted to split the short rib (basically a dinosaur bone as seen below) and a few sides - corn, brussels sprouts...yum! I had a delicious cocktail which was basically a moscow mule made with Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka (grapefruit).

I found this gem on yelp and knew it was perfect for a working lunch. I ordered the Turkey Sweet and an iced tea - talk about heaven! I'm not really a sandwich person but this sandwich was life changing. The croissant, the shaved turkey, the onion apple marmalade...it was all just so amazing! This place quickly became a repeat offender so our rule has not applied here. We've been back!

I discovered this place from another blog and I'm so glad we tried it out! This adorable, low key restaurant had a great, simple menu and gorgeous outdoor seating. We particularly love the East Side of Austin.

I have this relationship with the food network.

6.13.2012

The Food Network and I, well we have this thing…it’s definitely more than a fling. I mean, we really like each other. We used to spend hours of quality time together…

Then we broke up. “It’s me, not you!” I exclaimed, as I picked up the phone to cancel my cable. Our relationship was just too expensive.

But in all seriousness, I do love the Food Network (and HGTV) for that matter. Ask C. He always knows who was watching the TV last because nine times out of 10, when he turns it on…it’s on Food Network or HGTV.

I’ve come to develop a real fascination with some of the chefs. In my other life, I would have potentially pursued a career in culiary arts. As kids, my sister and I used to set up the video camera and tape ourselves hosting cooking shows on “TV”.

We begged my mom to get us a set of those teeny tiny glass prep bowls.

I mean, it’s totally necessary to have each and every spice, garlic clove and egg in it’s own tiny bowl.

We weren’t the ones doing the dishes anyway.

(Someday, I WILL have my own personal dishwasher and an unlimited supply of always clean bowls and spatulas.)

Several of my favorite chefs have stunning restaurants that I’ve been dying to frequent. Though I’m pretty sure most of them are not personally cooking my dinner, their influence is still a part of their food. For me, it’s not always the meal that wins me over but the ambiance/personality of the place.

Side Note: I would like to have lunch at Ina Garten’s house. Do y’all watch Barefoot Contessa? You know how she’s always cooking for guests and talking about her amazing friends…someday, I want to be invited over. She doesn’t have a restaurant but I bet a meal at her house just might beat all the rest.

I’d take a meal at Giada’s house as well. She has the most adorable family…

I’m dying to try:

Tyler Florence’s - Wayfare Tavern | San Francisco, CA

He’s always tweeting pictures of his AMAZING meals and I just can’t wait to check out the place. How cute is it?? I also love his show, Tyler’s Ultimate.

Alex Guarnaschelli’s - Butter | New York, NY

Emeril Lagasse’s - Emeril’s | New Orleans, LA

This is the restaurant that started it all for Emeril and the FIRST cooking show my sister and I really watched. Do you remember the old Emeril episodes where he had the live audience and he would scream “BAM!” and the everyone would go nuts…?
